He was about to reap another $33 million when he was finally tripped up by a careful banker simply doing his due diligence and not blinded by Melnitzer’s apparent successes.

It turns out that Melnitzer was running a Ponzi scheme, one in which early investors were paid handsome returns, funded by money from later investors. Such schemes invariably collapse.
